Was confined to bed for 12 months due to a bad back.
Migrated from London, ENG to Adelaide, SA, AUS, on the 'Harbinger' which left London on 19 Aug 1883 & arrived at Port Adelaide on 10 Nov 1883. The 'Harbinger' was an iron-hulled 3-masted barque built in 1876.
For a time he lived in Cassie St, Rosebery (later renamed Collinswood) where he was listed as a clerk. A personal diary, which covers the period Aug to Oct 1886, shows that he sailed to Melbourne in the SS Adelaide on Aug 14, arriving on Monday 16th. Initially he took a cottage in St Kilda & was involved in selling sanitary pans & insecticide. On August 23rd he moved to Rainsford Street (location?). Apparently this venture was unsuccessful & he returned to South Australia.
After finally establishing himself in Adelaide, he sent for Alice Jennings & they married on her arrival in 1891. They lived at Wright St, Adelaide (1893); North East Rd, Medindie (1894); 25 Provost St, North Adelaide (1895-1896). From ca 1896 to Jan 1911 lived at Hastings St, New Glenelg (later named Glenelg South). Moved in Jan 1911 to Bull's Creek Rd, Lower Mitcham (later named Belair Rd) then moved to 'Hawarden' Wattlebury Rd, Lower Mitcham (1913-1921). The house on the west corner of Mitcham Ave was later demolished. In about 1922 he moved to Berri. It is known that he was elected auditor of the Berri District Council in June 1928 but probably he had already held this position for several years previously. Retired to 32 Sturt Ave, Colonel Light Gardens ca 1930.
The following obituary appeared in an Adelaide newspaper: -
Mr. William Henry Pope. 92, of Colonel Light Gardens, who died recently, had lived in South Australia for more than 61 years, having sailed from London in the barque Harbinger, in 1883. He was for many years accountant at Dixon's (late the B. & A. Tobacco Company's) factory at Light square. In 1913 he entered into private practice in Adelaide and later at Berri. He was keenly interested in public affairs, and was a member of the Single Tax League, and, for a time, president. He was a member of the Congregational Church, and a lay preacher of the Methodist Church. He is survived by his widow, three sons (Messrs. H. G. and E. W. Pope, of the Water Supply Dept., and D. E. Pope, of the Lands Dept.): two daughters (Mesdames J. D. Williams, of Reade Park. and K. Polkinghorne, of Pt. Augusta), and 12 grandchildren.
