Biographical notes:
Migrated from ENG to SA, AUS in the barque Clara (passenger list 59/1) ex London 20 Sep 1858 & Southampton 1 Oct 1858, arriving Port Adelaide on 20 Jan 1859, 113 days after leaving Southampton. (see The Register of 21 Jan 1859 for a description of the journey.) The passenger list names John (40 labourer), Harriet (née Tilbrook 390, Charles (17 agricultural labourer), Anne (15, servant), Sarah (11), Mary (9), Betsy/Elizabeth (8), Samuel (4). The South Australian Register for 21 Jan 1859 lists John, Harriet, Sarah, Mary, Betsey, Samuel, Charles & Ann. Samuel was placed in quarantine on arrival & was terrified that he had been abandoned by his family. His fears would have been compounded by the death of his sister Ann who was also in quarantine.
