Son of Henry Gibbs & Elizabeth Blackmore.
Occupation: Servant (1871), Chief Steward on ocean liners, Baker & confectioner.
Addresses: At 1861 census - Common Lane, Seaton & Beer, DEV; At 1871 census - Providence House, Fore Street, Seaton & Beer, DEV; On retirement - Esplanade, Semaphore, SA.
Chief steward on various liners travelling to Odessa, Constantinople & Congo, East Africa. Invalided home from the latter having contracted fever. Married 1st wife (his cousin Ellen Ann Gibbs) in England in 1880. Migrated to South Australia on the Collingwood. In 1883 he commenced business as baker & confectioner in Brown Street, Adelaide (now Morphett St). On death of wife in 1885, he returned to England, on the Liguria, with his 3 children, where he left them to be raised & educated by relatives. On returning to Australia he participated unsuccessfully in the 1886 gold rush at Teetulpa (near Yunta, SA). He then started a business in Argent Street, Broken Hill, NSW. In 1898, he married Gertrude Downer with whom he had 2 children. In 1912 he returned to Adelaide & started a business at 58 Adelaide Rd, Glenelg. He retired to the Esplanade, Semaphore but died suddenly while travelling in the UK where his daughter lived in Wimbledon .
