All documents give his first name as Arthur except the birth registration which lists him as Frederick Arthur.
Arthur signed up in the 3rd (Reserve) Gloucester Regiment by 1911 for home service only. At the outbreak of war in 1914, he was at the Horfield Barracks in Bristol whence they were moved to Abbey Wood (Woolwich) & on to Gravesend in May 1915. In May 1916 they were moved to Sittingbourne in the Maidstone area for duty with the Thames & Medway Garrison.
