In the 1861 census, Charlotte is listed as a lodger in the home of John Long, whose wife Ellen is listed as a Silk Winder. Charlotte is described as an unmarried silk worker, age 20. 11 months later she was back with her parents in Bruton, having given birth to her son Silas James Deacon, later known as James Thomas Deacon. Since the father's name is not given on the birth certificate, we have assumed that Charlotte was unmarried when her son was born.
